Day by day
How the children live at our boarding school

Days in Jharkot are shaped by the sun: for starts, you need its light as there is not a regular supply of electricity - and it tends to be cut off after darkness has fallen. The solar panels at the school offer only emergency light. The sun's warmth is even more important though: after sunset it becomes very cool, even in summer. After the warming evening meal the best thing is to get quickly to bed. Except on special occasions!

This is the plan for Sunday to Thursday, on Friday there is a half day.

Friday afternoon is given over to recreation and sport. Sometimes everyone gathers with the Tibetan teacher in her room and watch Bollywood or scary films on the laptop from the office.

Saturday is free and every other week the children visit their families, as long as the journey can be made on foot; they often take their school friends with them.

At each mealtime two of the older children dish up the food; two others do the washing up (including the young ones). These tasks are taken on by different children every day.

At weekends, or on Buddhist or Hindu holidays there are special trips. The children show the volunteers their parents' houses, or they take part in the rituals of the village community and the surrounding monastery, or in weddings or other celebrations.
